Audio from the second week of the advent backgrounds class taught Sunday mornings in Branches. Enjoy!
For this, the final week of our advent series, we're looking at what it means to find deep Joy, even when Caesar still claims to be Lord and Herod is still on the throne. Discussion Questions below.
Last week, we looked at Caesar Augustus and the Christmas story from the book of Luke. This week, we look at Herod and the Christmas story from the book of Matthew. And at Starbucks cups and used car dealerships. I hope you enjoy it :)
Discussion Questions coming soon!
This past week, my Sunday School class went deeply through the background to Luke's version of the Christmas Story. We looked in-depth at what it meant that the Christmas story takes place at the time of Caesar Augustus, and at just how subversive and dangerous this whole story actually is. I've attached the audio and handout from that class below. It's kind of long, but hopefully helpful. :)
This week, we're talking through some of the backgrounds to the advent story. When the story begins, "a decree went out from Caesar Augustus," that carried some serious overtones to those who would have read this story.
Take some time to watch the video, then work through the questions below.
